Peony Vice

Fall: the time of year for textured accents, antique hydrangeas, and dahlias the size of your beautiful face. However, this year the market is being flooded with Peony of every color, shape and size. If not for your pom-pom hat and cold hands, you’d think this was Spring.

How can this be so?

Well, we actually have the international war on drugs to thank for this and it dates back to 1991. In an attempt to help South America expand their exports–specifically, their legal exports–US Congress passed the Andean Trade Preference Act (now known as the Andean Trade Promotion and Drug Eradication Act). This leniency in tax regulation brought rose prices down by almost 80%, and ultimately led to the continent catching up closer to the untouchable-ness of Holland-grown product. What does it mean for you? It means you can finally garnish your maple-glazed pumpkin pie with blush tree peony and pops of ranunculus. Thank you, Columbia. #goooooooooal
